Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez emphasized that he spoke to Gerard Pique earlier this summer about his role with the team this season.
The experienced defender has not played a single minute in La Liga so far. Xavi doesn’t see him as a starting 11 player.
“I spoke to Gerard before I went on vacation,” she said.
“I’ve been open. I told him we’re going to strengthen the defense and it won’t be easy for him. He can help us in another role.
“There is competition for everyone. I try to choose the best to win games.

After signing Jules Kounde on Saturday, Xavi said Barcelona could make a right-back transfer.
“The left-back position is well maintained with Alejandro Balde and Jordi Alba,” added Xavi.
“We are looking at the market. On the right, there is no natural right-back except Sergio Dest.
“There’s the exhibition [Roberto], Ronald [Araujo], Jules [Kounde].
“We will look at the market, but we intend to strengthen the right-back position.”
When asked about Barcelona’s interest in Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Xavi made it clear they were interested.
“There is always hope, but this transfer is difficult,” said Xavi.
“It’s complicated. We only have a few days and they should be gone.”
Xavi praised Real Valladolid coach Pacheta ahead of the duel between the two teams at the Camp Nou on Sunday.
“We are fans of Pacheta,” Xavi said.
“As a teacher, he surprised me. Brave, aggressive, systematic. He is a noble person.
“It will be difficult. Real Valladolid is a brave, cheerful team with good players.
“We are facing a team that is doing well. Our target is three points.”
