Jose Mourinho disrespected me – Martial, who said that the Portuguese manager disrespected him, remembers those days badly.
WHAT HAPPENED? Mourinho took over as Manchester United boss a year after Martial was signed.
However, the French player lost his place under the Portuguese coach and had a hard time when Zlatan Ibrahimovic took the number 9 jersey and lost his place to Alexis Sanchez.
WHAT THEY SAID: “It all started with the jersey number,” he told France Football.
“He sent me a text on vacation asking if I’d switch to number 11 and said it was great because it was the number one for legend Ryan Giggs.
“I told him I had great respect for Giggs, but he stated that I preferred my number 9.
“And when I got back to the club, I found the number 11 jersey. So he took my number from me.
“He disrespected me directly. He talked about me in the press and made small statements. He made fun of me, just like he did with Karim Benzema at Real Madrid.
“In the [2017-18] season, I was the team’s top scorer in the first half. He brought in Alexis Sanchez at the start of the season and then I didn’t play much.
“It was the World Cup season and it cost me a lot, especially since the French team won, I thought I should have been there.”
THE BIG PICTURE: It took a while for Martial to find a regular spot in United’s starting 11 after Mourinho’s departure.
His most prolific season at Old Trafford was the 2019-20 season, in which he made 31 appearances in the Premier League and scored 17 goals, as well as four goals in the Europa League.
