Lake Merritt / Uptown Association

The Lake Merritt-Uptown District Association fosters an environment where businesses thrive, art flourishes, and residents and visitors alike can enjoy all that downtown Oakland has to offer.

The Lake Merritt/ Uptown Association is Community Benefit District (CBD) which serves to revitalize a 37-block area in the heart of Oakland, California. The CBD provides special benefit services such as district maintenance, safety and security management, as well as cultural and community enrichment. The District was formed in 2009 by property owners who supported a voluntary property tax which would fund the additional services to the community over the next 10 years.

Local Happenings

The City of Oakland is preparing a specific plan for Downtown Oakland to ensure continued growth and revitalization to benefit both Downtown residents and the larger community. The plan will provide sound policy guidance on development, linking land use, transportation, economic development, housing, public spaces, cultural arts, and social equity.

We want to engage all Oakland communities, particularly those located in downtown neighborhoods, in broad participation in the planning process. To that end, Planning staff will meet with community groups, neighborhood groups and individuals to continue soliciting public comment as well as input and feedback on the preliminary draft ideas. There are also digital opportunities to follow the process and provide input into the Plan.

While our districts provide important services to our stakeholders there is a bigger story here, one that’s already being told by extraordinary artists, vibrant small businesses, community organizations, residents and the people who work in this area every day. To tell that story the districts launched Oakland Central – a place to share the great stories, events and happenings that the center of our beautiful city offers.
